Mudliyarkuppam village - 11th February 2006

In a special ceremony on 11th February 2006, 92 newly built houses were gifted to the citizens of Mudliyarkuppam village in Tamil Nadu. This village had been totally destroyed when the killer Tsunami struck the shores of India on December 26, 2004.

Mysore Citizen Forum, in which Avadhoota Datta Peetham is a member took the responsibility of totally rebuilding this ravaged village. In one of the novel ideas in India, the citizens and institutions of a city came forward to develop a destroyed village. More than 50 boats were gifted to the fishermen last year itself so that they could begin their life all over again.

On 11th February, the village wore a new look with the entirely new village getting ready to be inaugurated. Karnataka Chief Minister, Sri H.D. Kumara Swamy, who assumed office a week ago came to the function and handed over the keys to the villagers.

Sadguru Sri Ganapati Sachchidananda Swamiji of Avadhoota Datta Peetham, Jagadguru Sri Shivaratri Deshikendra Swamiji of Suttur Math, Sri Sushameendra Teertha Swamiji of Raghavendra Mantralayam and the junior seer of Adichunchanagiri Math Participated and Blessed the villagers in their attempt for a new life.

It is planned to develop 150 more houses in the second phase to ensure that all families in the village have a house to live.

The name of the Village has now been changed to "Mudliyarkuppam Mysore Colony".

Sri Swamiji spoke on the occasion and mentioned that the novel experiment of the citizens of Mysore to pool up resources and assist a calamity ravaged area proved successful and that was the reason for Datta Peetham to be part of it. Sri Swamiji continued saying that the only force humans had to face calamity was compassion to fellow beings. Sri Swamiji remarked that Datta Peetham and devotees had donated more than two million rupees for the Tsunami rehabilitation efforts.
